Rock lake--indians and lava

Rock lake: Rock Lake is about 60 miles south and a little west of Spokane. Go first to Rosalia --the gateway to Pine Creek and USE THE MAP BELOW WHERE THE PIN SAYS START. You can park at multiple places to begin the trail--the best place to park is where hole in the ground road crosses the creek--the box cars are barely five minutes after you start. A geologic wonder that few people know about and even the Indians were spooked by it. There are too many mysteries about it too list. A freight train of model T-s went in and was never found. The indians wouldnt go in it because anytime anyone did they got killed. I myself broke my outdrive by hitting an underwater pinnacle and took photos of the spot 35 years later. The lake is useless for diving because its far too deep--and too scary. Indian chief Kamiakin was banished there and his head was stolen never to be found. He was reburied in an unknown location on the west side.  Here is some historic video:

Most people agree that rock lake sort of gives people the willies. The "John Wayne" pioneer trail (rails to trails) runs right along the edge for those brave enough to chance it and its trip across several trestles and 2 very dangerous tunnels.  Below are also several pictures of "tree castings" from basalt encasing the trees 15 million years ago with the wood still inside.

The boxcars were left because everyone was too afraid to get them. I had a link here for the ice age floods but removed it since it would have made the page for biking trails get too mixed up as to its focus. I will create another page for geology spots and links.

a rare picture since dave not only posed but faced the camera--I myself dont like to pose for pictures.
